A brief history
Clissmann Horse Caravans, the longest established Horse Caravan Operator in Ireland was started by Dieter Clissmann in 1969. He returned to Ireland having worked with the Irish Tourist board in Frankfurt for a number of years with the idea to set up a unique family business in the Wicklow countryside.
After a number of years, Mary Clissmann (Dieter’s wife) took over the management of the business and developed new products which included donkey walking holidays and corporate incentive days. Sadly, Mary died in 2011, but left behind a growing business and is remembered very fondly by many of our visitors.
Since 2011, Neasa Clissmann, partnered by her father Dieter has been running the business from their new base at Cronybyrne.
As a family owned and operated business we take great pride in ensuring our visitors a warm friendly welcome and a memorable holiday experience. A lot of time is allocated to each individual group while here on the farm and we make every effort to facilitate any extra requests visitors may have. We are also on call for any assistance our holiday makers may need while travelling on route. Our experienced team, many of whom have been here for 15+ years, can offer friendly guidance and a wealth of local knowledge.
Our Tinker Horses & Irish Cobs
Strong and sturdy, and yet gentle and docile, our Irish Cobs / Tinker horses gladly accompany visitors through the Wicklow countryside. They are easy to handle, groom, harness and drive and are great with children and family pets. This horse breed has proven very popular worldwide for their kind, quiet intelligence and their versatility suitable for both beginners and experienced horse handlers.
Our Gypsy Caravans
The caravans we offer, designed and built by us are based on the traditional barrel top wagon used by Irish people living a nomadic life-style known as `Travelling People’ or ‘Travellers’. This kind of caravan pulled by a single horse has been used with modifications for over 150 years.
